Zithromax

Zithromax is a macrolide antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections. The active ingredient in Zithromax is azithromycin which is formulated as oral tablets, oral capsules and an oral suspension.

Drug Uses

Zithromax is available by prescription only. This drug is used for bacterial infections of the ears and skin, as well as sexually transmitted diseases and respiratory infections. Zithromax is prescribed for children suffering with ear and throat infections, as well as pneumonia and tonsillitis.

Zithromax is not used for viral infections.

Doctors prescribe Zithromax for other medical conditions.

Dosage

Zithromax must be taken as directed. Do not adjust the dose before contacting your doctor.

Zithromax tablets and capsules should be taken with water. The capsules must be taken on an empty stomach.

Take the full course must be taken even if your symptoms improve. If you stop treatment too soon there may be a reccurrence of the infection.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, take it when you remember. However, it should not clash with the next dose. If this happens, ignore the missed dose. Do not take a double dose.

Precautions

Tell your doctor if you suffer with kidney or liver disease, irregular heart beat, or a history of Long QT syndrome (a rare heart condition).

Zithromax is not likely to harm an unborn fetus, therefore it is safe for pregnant women to use this drug. Zithromax is passed into breast milk so women who are breast-feeding should use Zithromax with caution.

Antacids containing aluminum and magnesium should be taken two hours before, or two hours after, a dose of Zithromax.

Your doctor must have full details of your medical history, and any other medications you use. These include vitamin supplements and herbal medicines. Zithromax can react badly with certain medications.

Zithromax can cause sensitivity to the sun. If you go outside wear suitable clothing and use sunscreen. Do not use tanning booths or sun lamps.

Side-effects

Call for emergency medical assistance if any of the following allergic symptoms occur: difficulty in breathing, hives, or swelling of the lips, face, tongue or throat.

Contact your doctor if you have any of the following serious side-effects: bloody or watery diarrhea, irregular heart beat, chest pain, low fever, stomach pain, lack of appetite, clay-colored stools, dark urine, jaundice, fever, sore throat, or headache with severe peeling, blistering or skin rash.

Less serious side-effects may include mild nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, dizziness, stomach pain, fatigue, headache, nervousness, insomnia, mild itching or skin rash, vaginal itching or discharge, hearing problems, or decreased sense of taste or smell.

This is not a complete list of side effects. If any other uncomfortable symptoms occur and persist, contact your doctor.

Overdose

If overdose with Zithromax is suspected, get emergency assistance immediately. Symptoms of overdose include stomach discomfort, vomiting, nausea, or diarrhea.

Storage

Zithromax should be kept in a cool, dry place away from sun and moisture.
